For years Newark residents, especially people of color, have complained of abuse by the Newark police department, including excessive force.
In 2016 the Department of Justice settled a lawsuit against the city, after confirming widespread police violations including stops, arrests, uses of force and thefts. The city then established a civilian review board. The Newark Fraternal Order of Police then sued.
Now the case has reached the New Jersey Supreme Court. On Monday April 27 at 10am, the case will be heard. And, for the first time in history, due to the pandemic, the hearing will be virtual and anyone can watch it live online.
