Synopsis:

In this week’s segment we discuss the importance of including African descended people in discussions around climate change and just transition from fossil fuel production, as a Black Agenda Report contributor joins us from a conference dedicated to this issue that is taking place in Colombia. But we begin with a conversation about deed theft with an activist from a New York City group dedicated to stopping the loss of Black homeownership that occurs through deceptive and illegal means.

Deed theft, the taking of property by illegal or unethical means, is rampant in New York City and other cities in the U.S. Black homeowners are particularly vulnerable to the loss of property through frauds, forgeries, conservatorship, and other means which take properties away from families as speculation and market manipulation have increased the value of homes.

We are joined by Evangeline of the People’s Coalition to Stop Deed Theft, a grassroots alliance of deed theft victims, homeowners, advocates, legal experts, and community leaders united to end the widespread, systemic theft of homes. The PCSDT is demanding the passage of legislation that will prevent this property loss from taking place. We will also discuss the case of Carmella Charrington, who was jailed as she sought to prevent an eviction from a home that has been in her family for many years.

First International Conference to Phase Out Fossil Fuels will take place in Santa Marta, Colombia from April 24 to April 29. Anthony Rogers-Wright, a Black Agenda Report contributor, is in Santa Marta and will provide analysis. His latest Black Agenda Report column addressed the issue of Afro-Descendants and how and whether they are being included in these important discussions. We also discuss environmental racism in the U.S.
