In this week’s segment we talk to a man whose brother was killed by an NYPD officer who the police commissioner, reappointed by Zohran Mamdani, refused to fire from his job. But first we discuss a new anthology, China Changes Everything, with one of the contributing authors.
Jacqueline Luqman is a radical activist based in Washington, DC, and the co-founder of Luqman Nation, an independent Black media outlet. She joins us from Washington DC to discuss a newly published book, China Changes Everything: An anthology by social justice activists, journalists, and commentators, which she and I have both contributed to. China Changes Everything is a project of the Friends of Socialist China and is an effort to document why China’s accomplishments are so important to understand. Jacqueline Luqman’s contribution to the anthology is entitled, Communist Principles and Culture Drive China’s Development for the Benefit of All Humanity.
Zohran Mamdani ran for the New York City mayoralty promising significant reform in policing. Yet before election day he announced that he would reappoint Jessica Tisch, police commissioner in the Eric Adams administration. We’re joined by Samy Feliz, an organizer with the Justice Committee, a grassroots organization dedicated to building a movement against police violence and systemic racism in New York City and empowering low-income Latinx and other people of color to address these issues. Samy Feliz is also the brother of Allan Feliz, who was killed by an NYPD officer in 2019. That officer did not face legal or departmental charges. He joins us from New York City to discuss the implications of the Jessica Tisch reappointment.
