  • Black politics in Newark, New Jersey – Analysis of one city’s politics as a former mayor passed away and the current mayor was arrested protesting Trump immigration policy -
Synopsis: In this week’s segment we discuss the modern history of Black politics in the city of Newark, New Jersey after the death of a long serving former mayor and the arrest and brief detention of the current mayor during a protest against an immigration detention facility. But first we have analysis of the lack of enforcement for violations of international law in regard to the human rights of Palestinians and other peoples around the world.

Our guest is Craig Mokhiber. He is an International human rights lawyer and former director of the New York Office of the United Nation’s High Commissioner for Human Rights. He stepped down from that post in October 2023 and penned a  letter addressed to the UN high commissioner for human rights in which he condemned the UN’s failure to protect Gazans from what he called a “text book case of genocide.” Craig Mokhiber joins us from New York as the U.S. and Israel continue their partnership in committing war crimes and as the UN and its agencies continue their subservience to the United States. The death toll and the destruction of Gaza continue but now under the guise of a supposed disagreement in policy between the U.S. and Israel.

The late Sharpe James was the mayor of Newark, New Jersey for a record setting 20 years before he was succeeded by Cory Booker. Current mayor Ras Baraka was recently arrested and briefly detained by agents of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), while protesting at a recently reopened immigration detention facility. Baraka is also running for governor. Lawrence Hamm, of the People’s Organization for Progress, joins us from Newark to talk about Black politics in that city.
