The late Sharpe James was the mayor of Newark, New Jersey for a record setting 20 years before he was succeeded by Cory Booker. Current mayor Ras Baraka was recently arrested and briefly detained by agents of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), while protesting at a recently reopened immigration detention facility. Baraka is also running for governor. Lawrence Hamm, of the People’s Organization for Progress, joins us from Newark to talk about Black politics in that city.
