Synopsis:

Ajamu Baraka is a Black Agenda Report contributing editor and director of the north south project for people centered human rights, a project of the Black Alliance for Peace. He recently participated in a delegation which traveled to Ecuador to observe that country’s recent presidential election and conditions for the African descended community there. He joins us to discuss the delegation’s work and charges of electoral fraud in the wake of president Daniel Noboa’s declaration of a re-election victory.

We are joined by Conrad Blackburn, policy counsel and staff attorney in the Criminal Defense Practice of the Bronx Defenders. The Bronx Defenders is a public defender non-profit organization and a member of the Alliance to Protect Kalief’s Law, which seeks to protect defendants’ rights to discovery, the sharing of evidence between prosecutors and defense attorneys. The governor, District Attorneys, and some New York State legislators argue that 2019 legislation which modified the state’s discovery statutes is creating a rise in recidivism and in cases being dismissed. Bronx Defenders and other organizations argue that such claims are erroneous and that any so-called reform will tilt the scales in favor of prosecutors and against the rights of defendants to speedy trials and adequate defense of their cases. The New York state budget is late in part because this issue has not been resolved. Conrad Blackburn joins us from New York City and will provide analysis.

The new watch word for liberal democrats is “abundance.” Abundance is the title of a book written by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson which purports to be a guide for Democratic Party success. But this concept of abundance and other policies allegedly different from those of republicans are sleights of hand that are synonymous with neo-liberalism and climate destruction.  We’re joined by Anthony Rogers-Wright, a Black Agenda Report contributor and a climate/environmental liberation and racial justice advocate, writer, and policy expert. He is an active member of the Black Alliance for Peace and the Movement for Black Lives. He hosts the radio program, “Full Spectrum with Anthony Rogers-Wright” on WPFW.

Guests:
  • Ajamu Baraka – North - South Center for People Centered Human Rights
