WHAT'S NEXT FOR GAZA
Just as the truce was about to expire early Thursday, Israel and Hamas agreed to a 24-hour extension in an effort to negotiate the release of more Israeli and other civilians detained in Gaza.
This is the second extension of a truce that began last Friday. What comes next is uncertain. Israel has vowed that its war will continue, while the Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, has ordered its soldiers to prepare to return to battle. Yet speculation remains that a wider deal may be under discussion.
In recent days, the Joe Biden administration – Israel’s indispensable partner in the Gaza genocide – has warned Israel against repeating the mass displacement, death and destruction it caused in northern Gaza, in the territory’s south.
Meanwhile, 2.3 million people in Gaza continue to uncover the scale of death and destruction Israel inflicted over the last seven weeks. And as uncertainty about further extensions in the truce prevails, they must try to prepare psychologically and phyisically for the resumption of Israel’s indiscriminate attacks that have claimed at least 15,000 lives, including 5,500 children.
On today’s livestream Nora Barrows-Friedman, Asa Winstanley, Jon Elmer and I hope – given the difficulties of connecting – to be joined from Gaza by friend, colleague and Electronic Intifada contributor Refaat Alareer.
We will also be joined once again by Dr. Tarek Loubani. Tarek is an emergency room physician based in Ontario. He has regularly worked at al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City and remains in contact with medical colleagues in Gaza.
With Jon Elmer, we will examine what the recent prisoner exchanges tell us about the state of the resistance in Gaza, what we can learn from the most recent videos of both Israelis and Palestinians being released, and what may come next across Palestine.
