WBAI-FM Upcoming Program
Morning Irsay

Sun, Jan 31, 2021 8:00 AM

Hi everybody… James Irsay here. This Sunday, Jan.31 from 8-10am on Morning Irsay, we have an echo of Holocaust Remembrance Day. Special guest Henry Sapoznik, a musicologist specializing in historical cantorial and klezmer music, has exhumed the artistry of a unique figure in Jewish history - the man known in the Yiddish language as “Toyveh, Der Schvartzer Khaz’n” - Toyveh the Black Cantor. Thomas La Rue Jones was a Black American who lead prayers in a Harlem synagogue of “Moorish Jews”, toured as a performer, worked the Yiddish Theatre, and - fortunately for us - made recordings on 78rpm disks.

Henry will also present recordings of marquee superstar cantors who were idolized by millions. Join Henry Sapoznik and myself this Sunday Jan 31, 8-10am, for “The Black Cantor” - a subject tailor made for WBAI.

Be there, or be “forever cut off from among thy people” - whoever they might be !!
