On this show, we’ll be joined by Yiddish theater artists David Mandelbaum, Amy Coleman and Hannah Gee to discuss the 100th Anniversary production of “The Dybbuk,” S. Ansky’s canonical work for the Hebrew and Yiddish theater on mystical possession, first performed by the legendary Vilna Troupe in Warsaw in 1920, now live streaming in a bi-lingual production by the New Yiddish Rep in collaboration with Theater for the New City running through January 31.
A few words about the New Yiddish Rep which was founded by Mandelbaum (its Artistic Director) and Coleman in 2007. Its new and startling Yiddish-language productions of ‘Waiting for Godot,” “Death of Salesman,” and “God of Vengeance,” to name a very few, have shed new light on the dramatic power of the Yiddish language and cultivated new interest in the long and fabled history of Jewish literature for the stage. Actress Hannah Gee who makes her acting debut in ‘the Dybbuk,” was born into an ultra-Orthodox community which she left several years ago. She writes poetry, prose and rap and has just released her first video on Youtube, called “Stille” (“Silence” in Yiddish).
Hosted by Janet Coleman and David Dozer
