On this episode, Animal Matters looks at animal care from two very different—but deeply connected—perspectives: the future of veterinary medicine across America and an innovative program teaching young people hands-on skills while providing care for dogs in the community.

In the first half of the program, Jeff and Erin welcome Dr. Jen Quammen, President of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), for a wide-ranging conversation about the state of veterinary medicine in the United States. They’ll discuss where veterinarians are most needed, the particular challenges facing rural and food-animal communities, what it takes to become a veterinarian, the cost of veterinary education and student debt, burnout and retention, and the growing challenge of making veterinary care accessible to families. The conversation will also explore the Rural Veterinary Workforce Act, the role of veterinary technicians, and how technology could change the profession in the years ahead.

Then, Animal Matters turns closer to home with Amelia Casparian, Canine Rescue and Rehab Trainer at The Children’s Village. Amelia will talk about the organization’s free dog-grooming clinic, where young people gain hands-on experience working with animals while learning grooming, animal behavior, safety, responsibility, patience and skills that can potentially lead to future employment. We’ll hear how participants are trained and supervised, what the experience can mean for young people, and how the program is also helping dogs and families in the surrounding community.

It’s an hour about the people who care for animals today—and the people being prepared to care for them tomorrow.
