MEDICAL AID IN DYING

A historic change in New York healthcare began this month.

On Thursday, August 13 at 5 PM ET, City Watch host Jeff Simmons welcomes Assemblywoman Amy Paulin, Chair of the New York State Assembly Health Committee, to WBAI 99.5 FM New York and streaming worldwide at WBAI.org.

After more than a decade of legislative debate, New York's Medical Aid in Dying Act has officially taken effect, giving mentally capable, terminally ill adults with a prognosis of six months or less the legal option to request medication they may choose to self-administer to end unbearable suffering.

Assemblywoman Paulin, the bill's author, joins Jeff to discuss why she fought for the legislation, the extensive safeguards included in the law, how implementation will work, and what it means for patients, families, physicians, hospitals, and end-of-life care across New York.

The conversation will also examine ethical concerns raised by opponents, patient autonomy, physician participation, and what New Yorkers should understand about one of the state's most significant healthcare laws in decades.

Then later in the show the phone lines are open at (212) 209-2877 for your views on the new law.

Listen live Thursday at 5 PM ET on WBAI 99.5 FM or stream at WBAI.org.
