SERENA MARTIN OF NEW HOUR FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN

Tune in to City Watch on WBAI 99.5 FM NY and streaming at wbai.org on Thursday, June 4 at 5 PM ET, when host Jeff Simmons speaks with Serena Martin, Executive Director of New Hour for Women and Children.

New Hour is dedicated to empowering mothers, women and children impacted by incarceration. The organization provides fifteen weekly programs inside Long Island’s three jails and offers reentry support to those returning home from incarceration.

Serena Martin leads New Hour’s advocacy and policy reform work across New York State. Prior to joining New Hour, she served as Executive Director of Herstory Writers Workshop and as Associate Director of Policy at the Correctional Association of New York’s Women in Prison Project. She was also a key organizer of the anti-shackling law that now prohibits the shackling of incarcerated mothers during labor.

Serena brings both professional expertise and lived experience to this work. She is a survivor of isolated confinement, earned her associate’s degree through the College Bound Program at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, and received her bachelor’s degree from Adelphi University. She has served on Governor Hochul’s New York State Domestic Violence Task Force, the Suffolk County Welfare to Work Task Force, the Justice for Women COVID-19 Task Force, and the Suffolk County Police Reform and Reinvention Task Force.

Join City Watch for a powerful conversation about incarceration, reentry, motherhood, reform, and what it means to support women and families impacted by the criminal legal system.

Listen live Thursday at 5 PM ET on WBAI 99.5 FM NY or stream at wbai.org.
