INTERDISCIPLINARY FILMMAKER ALAN GOVERNAR ON HIS CAREER RETROSPECTIVE AND NEW FILM QUIET VOICES IN A NOISY WORLD: THE STRUGGLE FOR CHANGE IN JASPER, TEXAS
On tonight’s show we’ll be joined by the inter-disciplinary artist and filmmaker Alan Governar to discuss his career retrospective and his new film Quiet Voices in a Noisy World: The Struggle for Change in Jasper Texas, a powerful documentary that pays tribute to a group of African-American volunteers whose grassroots efforts have transformed their community through extraordinary re-discovered photographs and a wide range of projects aimed at restoring dignity, truth and social justice to a town with a violent and immutable past.
Alan Governar’s career has focused on marginalized and overlooked voices throughout America. In 1985, he founded Documentary Arts,, a Dallas and New York based cultural organization that mines a broad range of media to catalyze creative activity, energize community engagement, and initiate social change around diverse cultures and regional heritage. Accompanying the world premiere of Quiet Voices in a Noisy World in New York, Documentary Arts will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a film retrospective featuring a selection of Governar’s earlier docs, along with talkbacks at Cinema Village from November 14-20.
