BATTERIES: MISINFORMATION & REALITY

We expect to clear up a lot of the confusion, misinformation, and misunderstanding about batteries.

Critics of renewable energy keep mentioning "intermittency" i.e. when the sun dosn't shine and the wind doesn't blow. That can be addresed very easily. There are ways to store that energy for later use. Hydro storage is one way, but the most well-known is probably batteries. Lithium-ion batteries have gotten a bad rap for sometimes causing fires, but not all lithium batteries have that problem. Lithium-IRON-phosphate (LFP) batteries don’t cause fires. A better battery! (Too bad that both battery names start with the word "Lithium".)

You’ll also hear about other methods of storing renewable energy. Our guest, Energywiz Lindsay Audin, will give us the details. In his career he has saved customers 1000s of megawatts of electricity.

Misinformation vs Reality:
• All forms of renewable energy need batteries
• There is a lot of money being used to stop or slow down battery technology and use and they have the golfer-in-chief to help them. We will shine a light on the facts that the utilities and fossil fuel companies skip over.
• LFP can be used in SUVs because there is more space. The battery is 25 to 30% heavier.
• The federal electric vehicle (EV) tax credit is set to expire on September 30.
• Different methods store energy for different lengths of time: capacitors for seconds; batteries, flywheels, and pumped-hydro storage for long times.
• Pumped-Hydro Storage (in the Catskills since 1975, owned by NYPA).
• Batteries are not necessarily always dangerous. The fires are usually from improper charging- overcharging of older models makes them overheat – lithium does not need oxygen to burn.
• There's never been an LFP fire, even if you puncture them.
• What are the things that are influencing energy storage?
    Accelerated depreciation.
Tax deductions that can be sold.
Inflation Reduction Act incentives for batteries that continue past the solar incentives.
• Price of electricity fluctuates during the day. With batteries, you have the option to use the stored renewable energy whenever you want, not only at peak times.
• Lots of research on new battery technologies is happening.
• Solid state storage is in the future.
• Flashlight batteries use nickel cadmium, not lithium.
• How to properly charge an e-bike.
• Cheaper chargers don't stop charging when the battery is full.
• BESS - Battery Energy Storage System.

We open the show with news: avoiding blackouts with solar energy, Trump’s attack on a Vermont climate superfund act, and almost “plug-and-play” solar power for your balcony.
