DRAGNET, RUDY VALLEE, COLE PORTER, H FONDA, GUNSMOKE
Tonight, May 18, 2025, from 8 to 10 pm, we will hear DRAGNET with Jack Webb, and a full hour with Rudy Vallee and a host of Hollywood celebs from FLEISCHMANN'S YEAST. But first up, our weekly episode of GUNSMOKE.
Tune in to WBAI-NY 99.5 FM at 8pm, or listen to the stream at wbai.org for THE GOLDEN AGE OF RADIO, produced by Max Schmid.
GUNSMOKE from CBS on June 23, 1957 via the AFRS #272 "Home Surgery.” The first of five "favorite" stories being re-run at the "request" of listeners. The story was previously produced on Sept 13, 1952. Marshal Dillon is forced to amputate the leg of a settler on the prairie. The man's beautiful daughter is the object of Ben Walling's affection. With William Conrad, Parley Baer, Howard McNear, Georgia Ellis, John Dehner, Sammie Hill, Lawrence Dobkin, produced and directed by Norman Macdonnell, written by John Meston, SFX by Tom Hanley & Bill James, announcer George Walsh.
DRAGNET from NBC on Feb 21, 1952 #141 "The Big Producer" for Fatima. A trail of pornography leads to a run-down Hollywood studio and a movie has-been. Starring Jack Webb, Barney Phillips, Ralph Moody, Virginia Gregg, Marty Milner?, host Hal Gibney, written by James Moser, music by Walter Schumann, announcer George Fenneman.
THE FLEISCHMANN'S YEAST HOUR from the Red net WEAF, New York City aircheck on Dec 13, 1934 for Fleischmann's Yeast. The program originates from The Variety Theatre in Radio City. Host & MC Rudy Vallee. The first tune is "Sweet Music." Buck and Bubbles do a comedy routine and a great "Nagasaki." Rudy sings "I've Got An Invitation To A Dance" in a Shep Fields "Rippling Rhythm" arrangement. June Walker and Henry Fonda appear in a scene from "The Farmer Takes A Wife." Cole Porter sings his famous tune, "You're The Top" (a definitive performance, even though the number of choruses is near-infinite)! William S. Hart recites his famous "Pinto Ben" (based on his 1915 movie and phonograph record). Beatrice Lillie singing "River Stay 'Way From My Door" is not to be missed! A broadcast with Bill Hart and Cole Porter is truly unique! A high-point of broadcast history. With Rudy Vallee, The Connecticut Yankees, Cole Porter, William S. Hart, June Walker, Henry Fonda, Buck and Bubbles, Beatrice Lillie, Ralph Riggs, commercial spokesman R. E. Lee, The Stewart Sisters (doing a charming "On The Good Ship Lollipop"), announcer Jimmy Wallington.
