THE BERNARD HERRMANN SHOW
Tonight’s episode is all about the music of Bernard Herrmann. Before he was
the master of Hollywood film scores, he was the master of radio scoring, and
we’ve got four great examples.
SUSPENSE from CBS on Sept 02, 1942 #11 "The Hitch Hiker." Written by Herrmann’s wife, Lucille Fletcher. Bennie wrote the SUSPENSE theme music too. And this score was reused when Twilight Zone did it. Starring Orson Welles, Berry Kroeger, John Gibson
COLUMBIA PRESENTS CORWIN, part of COLUMBIA WORKSHOP from CBS on July 18, 1944 #18 "The Moat Farm Murder." Corwin introduces this true-crime story. Score went right into the CBS stock library, and Twilight Zone used more cues from this than from any other score. With Charles Laughton, Elsa Lanchester, Raymond Lawrence
THE LADY ESTHER ORSON WELLES THEATRE from CBS on Jan 12, 1942 "The Apple Tree" adapted from the story by John Galsworthy. With Orson Welles, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Eustace Wyatt, Bess Johnson as "Lady Esther"
CRIME CLASSICS from CBS on July 13, 1953 #5 “The Terrible Deed of Dr. Webster,” based on a murder case from 1849. Written by Morton Fine and David Friedkin, directed by Elliot Lewis, Hosted by Lou Merrill (as Thomas Hyland), with Jay Novello, Paula Winslowe, Larry Thor, Martha Wentworth, Herb Butterfield.
