ART IS A DEFENSE FOR HUMANITY

State of the Arts NYC shares a roundtable discussion with Pam Breaux, President and CEO of NASAA (National Assembly of State Art Agencies) in Washington, DC at the National Press Club.

Joining the roundtable talk was Susan DuPlessis, Program Director of the South Carolina Arts Comission and Matt Mardell, Director of the Colleton Museum, Farmers Market & Commercial Kitchen.

NASAA wanted to provide an update to “The Arts and America’s Bottom Line.” The report demonstrates the value of public investments in the arts on American communities today. In advance of the upcoming presidential State of the Union address, this reporting pays critical attention to how arts and creative expression drives America’s economy, with millions of jobs creating 4.2% of our nation’s gross domestic product (GDP). The arts and culture sector outweighs sectors like construction, transportation and mining in benefitting the country’s GDP.  Adding to the country’s bottom line, arts and culture generate a $26.4 billion trade surplus.

The press briefing also focused on arts-integrated medical treatments helping to heal military personnel with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with Dr. Sara Kass (CAPT. ret.), Senior Military Advisor for Creative Forces

Also joining the lineup this Friday is Alexandra Dean, Emmy award-winning documentary & news producer. We talk on her film Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story. Dean will present this film at the Athena Film Festival at Barnard College located in West Harlem. LaMarr was a glamour icon whose ravishing visage was the inspiration for Snow White and Cat Woman and a technological trailblazer who perfected a radio system to throw Nazi torpedoes off course during WWII.

Rounding out our program is Hector Tobar, author of the critically acclaimed, New York Times bestseller...  Deep Down Dark: The Untold Stories of 33 Men Buried in a Chilean Mine and the Miracle That Set Them Free. We will talk about his NYT op-ed "We Need Protest. And Paintings".
