Geographically speaking, Mark Twain was the most American!  Born in the South, his initial reputation was made out West, and with success, he built his mansion in Hartford, Connecticut for the easy commute to either Boston or New York City.  Foreshadowing the international role the USA would assume in the XX century, at the close of the XIX century Mark Twain was probably the world's best known American - so recognizable that, crossing the street in Berlin, the sight of him brought traffic to a stop.
