On the Count: The Prison & Criminal Justice Report

WOMEN IN POLITICS

Saturday, March 22, 2014   11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Host Nayaba Arinde
This week on On The Count: The Prison and Criminal Justice Report continues our
series of programs, "Resiliency as Resistance," recognizing and celebrating March as Women's History Month.  The program entitled, "Women in Politics," will examine social, political and economic issues and problems relevant to women with a focus on the New York State legislature.  Our special guest host is Nayaba Arinde, award winning executive editor of the New York Amsterdam News, the largest Black owned newspaper in the country.  Joining Naya for the first segment of our hour long program will be New York State Democratic Senators Velmanette Montgomery, former chair of the Committee on Children and Families, and Ruth Hassell-Thompson, former chair of the Committee on Crime and Corrections.  Both lost their chairs when the Republicans, along with a few turncoat Democrats who voted with them, became the majority party in the senate.

During the second segment of the show, these high-powered women will be joined by
Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the first woman Senate Minority Leader and one of the most influential legislative voices in the state. The discussion among these three powerful legislators and our distinguished journalist-editor will explore issues currently before the senate including the state budget, universal pre-k education, criminal punishment and justice, charter schools and affordable health care.  This program will be one of the best of the month long series. Don't miss it.
