This day in Literary History:
On 11 January 1936, at a dinner celebrating the pulp magazine BLACK MASK, Raymond Chandler meets Dashiell Hammett.  Chandler had begun writing detective stories in 1933, just as Hammett began to withdraw from literary activity.  No record was made on the nature of their conversation, or its duration, but many years later Chandler would recall that Hammett possessed an "enormous capacity for scotch."  Besides brilliant prose, another thing they had in common.
