APOLLO UPTOWN HALL: MOVEMENT REQUIRED
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2017 AT 4PM

The Apollo Theater has been a cultural mecca for 83 years and counting while also
historically been a gathering place for people to connect and discuss what’s on their
minds. This part of our legacy has attracted speakers to our stage ranging from
entrepreneurs to activists to U.S. Presidents. We created the Apollo Uptown Hall series to
allow us to regularly engage in conversations that matter uptown -- and beyond.
Motivated by the themes from the Apollo and Opera Philadelphia’s upcoming opera,
We Shall Not Be Moved, Apollo Uptown Hall: Movement Required will feature an excerpt
of the award-winning documentary Let the Fire Burn, that covers one of the most
tumultuous (and largely forgotten) clashes between government and citizens in modern
American history.

Then we’ll focus on some of today’s problems in Urban America the film addresses, particularly law enforcement and community relations and the lack of youth and family services. What can we do within our communities? What can New Yorkers learn from Philadelphia initiatives, and vice-versa? And can the arts help?

Panelist include:

  • Iesha Sekou is the Founder and CEO of Street Corner Resources Inc., a not for profit 501(c)(3)
  • Jason Osder, Documentary Filmmaker and Educator
  • Jennifer Jones Austin is the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies (FPWA)
  • Marc Bamuthi Joseph, librettist for We Shall Not Be Moved opera is an inaugural recipient of the Guggenheim Social Practice initiative, and the United States Artists Rockefeller Fellowship. He is the founding Program Director of the nonprofit Youth Speaks
