A brief ceremony is planned Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the downtown wharf just upriver from the Belle of Louisville to honor the late civil-rights leader Julian Bond, who died recently.

The ceremony is being held at the request of the family of Bond, the NAACP and the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights.

At 2:30 p.m. on the banks of the Ohio River behind the Waterfront Development Corp. office next to Joe's Crab Shack, local civil rights activists will spread flower petals on the river in Bond's honor.

Bond requested his body be cremated, and his ashes be committed to the Gulf of Mexico. NAACP chapters across the country have been asked to gather at a body of water and spread flower petals on the water.
