FREE & CHEAP NYC - Week starting September 13, 2013
- 09/12/2013 by Angela Church & Maayan Schneider (WBAI)

Hello out there in virtual WBAI world!  Your friendly “Free and Cheap NYC” hosts are suffering from a bout of laryngitis due to computer glitches and moving issues.  Do not fret, for our golden (unanimously voted best word to use by the two of us) voices will be back again next week to tell you more about what is going on in NYC.

Until then, dear friends, read on:

And stop by the NY Library in Bryant park. Fantastic (and free) exhibit on children's books and their relevance not only in society now but in fashioning the mindsets of generations.  Makes one appreciate a truly good children's book; for as we all know, these stories stay with us well into adulthood.  Which story influenced you the most? (Maayan: The Folk of the Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton. It’s the story of 4 kids who travel up a magical tree completely inhabited by strange, noisy characters, and at whose top there’s a magic land that completely changes every 7 days. I now think it is a parable of New York City.)

Sundays Through November: Free Adventure Course with Zip Line, Rock Climbing, Ropes Course & More in Alley Pond Park, Queens (Near Bayside):

10am & 1:30pm (arrive early)
Free programs are available for individuals aged 8 and above on a first–come, first-served basis on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., May through November (weather permitting). Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. If you are with a large group you may be turned away or you may not be placed with the other members of your group. Crowds are expected.

The Alley Pond Park Adventure Course is a challenge or ropes course, featuring both low– and high–ropes course activities that promote team-building and problem–solving skills. The Adventure Course provides challenges and excitement for groups or individuals as they work through physically and intellectually demanding situations. The course is fully accessible; there are activities for all ages and all physical abilities.

Elements of the Alley Pond Park Adventure Course include a “zip-line”, a climbing and bouldering wall, a trust fall station, swings, nets, leaps and balance platforms. The Alley Pond Park Adventure Course is the first challenge course in New York City, the largest challenge course in the metropolitan region, and perhaps the most state-of-the-art challenge course in the United States.

We all know Juilliard is a school marked with excellence in the Arts; but did you know that it offers FREE performances to the public? It does!! For example, on Tuesday 9/17 at 8 pm, the Juilliard Jazz Quartet offers a free concert! Or, catch the "Music in Motion" series on Wednesdays at 12:30, offering "Sarabande [FAST DANCE if it comes from 16th century Spain or Mexico; COURTLY DANCE if it comes from 17th/18th Centuries], Swing, and everything in between". Check out our Website for more details:

I heard a free violin and piano concert there once, and it was wonderful!

And, if you're looking for louder or faster music, "Sweet Spot Festival" is bidding goodbye to summer this Saturday, Sept. 14th from 2-9 pm at Pier 1, Riverside Dr. and 70th St. There will be soulful house, disco, and dance classics. Check it out!
