Remembering September 11th
- New York 09/11/2013 by Linda Perry Barr (WBAI)

Register for benefits under the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund if you were affected by the toxic mix in downtown Manhattan.

This is the message Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney delivered on the floor of the House of Representatives as she marked the Anniversary of September 11th.

She said we lost 3,000 on 9/11, but many more lost their health. "Their valor and courage propelled them through the smoke - led them to brave the fires - and steadied them in their daunting work." Maloney says much changed and much has been restored since that day. 10 million people have visited memorial plaza that opened in 2011. The museum opens next spring. The104-story Freedom Tower - next year.

But the deadline to file for compensation is fast approaching. Maloney says "there are still men and women who suffer now - or will suffer later - from the effects of that massive toxic stew that enveloped lower Manhattan for months. So, on this special day - I would like to remind everyone - that the final deadline to register for the benefits under the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund is October 3."

Maloney
says please let everyone know. Registering will cost nothing.
