Malcolm X Speaks: In the Era of Trump
Now that this country has Donald Trump as president, we are painfully
aware of what may transpire in the next few years in regards to human
rights, public policy, the criminal justice system, housing, education and
the distribution of resources and essentials, and are driven to search for
those who can spirit us forward in these troubled times. We look for
leadership and reflect on those who have provided we the people in the
past with a world view that informed and inspired activism. And, one of
the greatest leaders, an internationalist, a Pan-Africanist, a human rights
champion was Malcolm X.
Feb. 21 will mark the 52nd anniversary of his assassination in the former
Audubon Ballroom (now the Malcolm X/Betty Shabazz Center). On that
day, he was discussing his Organization of Afro-American Unity when
he was gunned down. Throughout his career, he spoke about the
importance of creating unity amongst people of African-ancestry and
other oppressed peoples, all the time exposing the hypocrisy of America
as a purveyor of democracy around the world and within the communities
of color, of immigrants and of indigenous peoples at home. His life was
cut short but his legacy lives on. The young people must be taught this.
No matter who is in the White House, the fight for total self-determination
and liberation and equality goes on. The crisis of police violence and the
impacts of state oppression on black and brown communities are not new.
Malcolm X saw the world and spoke truth to power, his sentiments remain
relevant today and his words and ideals give us guidance. Malcolm X’s
legacy inspires us to seize responsibility for our circumstances and to
work together to improve the conditions of people. Malcolm X spent his
life seeking the oneness of humanity with compassion and integrity and
he gave everything he had to the pursuit, losing his life in the process.
We are proud to commemorate the life of Malcolm X. We remain grateful
to the lessons that Malcolm X taught us especially as we find ourselves
leaning on his council as we work to fight for absolute equality and the
recognition of our sisters and brothers humanity. We will come together
to celebrate him, to remember him, and to recommit ourselves to the
ideals that he lived by.
