COLOMBIAN PEACE TALKS NOT A GUERILLA SURRENDER

Friday, April 10, 2015   12:00 AM - 11:30 PM

As the Colombian peace process kicks into high gear, with some people predicting there might be an accord between FARC rebels and the government of Juan Manuel Santos before the end of the year, a number of major obstacles still exist. Among them continues to be the intransigence of the Colombian right, led by former President Alvaro Uribe. I spoke recently with Colombian political scientist and author Consuelo Ahumada, professor at the Jorge Tadeo Lozano University, and former editor in chief of La Nueva Gaceta who received her doctorate at NYU. We discussed the state of the peace talks, which she described are "at a point of no return." She reminded us that people must accept that if an accord is actually signed, this would only be the first stage of truly transforming Colombia.
