PROTESTS PLANNED IN NYC FOR MONDAY'S TPP NEGOTIATIONS

Friday, January 23, 2015   12:00 AM - 11:30 PM

Among the many themes discussed in President Obama’s State of the Union speech on Tuesday night was U.S. trade policy, one issue that seems to have bipartisan consensus in Washington, despite its profound contradictions in terms of strengthening the job prospects of the middle class, among many others. Obama is asking the GOP Congress to pass fast track legislation to move on major trade deals, like the Trans Pacific Partnership.

TPP bureaucrats are coming to NYC to continue negotiating an agreement that will help corporations attack NY's fracking ban, eliminate the community’s ability to fight LNG export terminals, and undermine fracking in other states. Coming in the wake of Obama’s State of the Union where the president called for a push for fast-track legislation on Free Trade agreements, this protest is calling attention to the many contradictions in US trade policy.

Mario spoke with community activist Adam Weissman of Trade Justice about the protests planned for Monday, and what they're concerned about the TPP.
