Global Movements, Urban Struggles connects issues and events from around the world with struggles and resistance in our local neighborhoods. GMUS looks at political struggles and those who are waging them - from Harlem to East Timor, from hip-hop to Andean Pan-Pipes, from marginalized to powerful, Global Movements, Urban Struggles is a weekly magazine hour that connects communities across the US and the world and engages in dialogue critical to their struggles.
Host/producer profiles:
Deepa Fernandes is a journalist, media activist and media trainer. She is a radio features producer who has worked in communities around the world to produce award-winning documentaries about forgotten peoples with marginalized voices. She is currently the host of Free Speech Radio News and a freelance producer for the British Broadcasting Corporation, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and Pacifica Radio. Fernandes also runs Radio Rootz: Kids Make Radio in Harlem.
Biju Mathew is an Assistant Professor of Informations Systems at Rider University whose activist work revolves around the Hindutva, Migration, and Globalization and attempts to explicate the inter-relations between these three nodes of interest for contemporary South Asian scholars and activists. Mathews also works mobilizing the immigrant Yellow-cab driver community through the New York Taxi Workers Alliance (NYTWA).
