Recapping some of what you heard on this week's show.

Robert Smith
– “Witchcraft” – Frankenweenie Unleashed!  (Walt Disney Records)

With music from and inspired by the upcoming Tim Burton film Frankenweenie (opens in 3D black & white on October 5th), Frankenweenie Unleashed! boasts Cure's Robert Smith weighing in with his lumbering, so-slow-if-it-was-a-bike-it’d-fall-over take on “Witchcraft,” the American Songbook standard written by Cy Coleman with lyrics by Carolyn Leigh.  Also on the soundtrack (to be released September 25th) are Wynona Ryder, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Grace Potter, and Flaming Lips.  Lovely peeps, all, but none can match what Smith has done to this song.  (Audio below)

Hearts of Darkness – “Shelf Life” – Shelf Life  (Shipshape Music)

Said to be Kansas City’s lone afrobeat ensemble, Hearts of Darkness bring something fierce here, from the new album released August 25th.  (Video below)

Check out the show's archive for these and other tunes, including a tribute to the late great Hal David.  (
