Liquid Sound Lounge's long history of supporting the underground independent scene of artists on the soulful tip spans 20 years as of this summer.
This kick off celebration is a benefit to ensure the priceless resource to this community including the fans, artists, promoters, and music lovers, that is WBAI 99.5fm does not go silent after our struggles in re-building from the effects of hurricane Sandy like so many folks in the tri-state area and beyond tuned in.
GROOVE COLLECTIVE has been a part of the show since it's inception having hit their 20th anniversary in 2012 and remaining the seminal groovy dance band that set the bar high for those inspired to follow in their foot steps. They'll be joined by many suprise guests to be announced.
DJ Afro of Los Amigos Invisibles, the Venezulan group that was inspired by GC, joins in along with NappyG one of the founding members of GC, Tony Ryan of WBAI's Soul Central Station Sat's 10p-1am and Jeannie Hopper, host/DJ of LSL Radio show on WBAI to finish off the ingredients of what will prove to be a bacchanal of sweaty happy dancing party people with a purpose to fuel the radio waves that thread them all together WBAI 99.5fm alive for now and future generations.
Tune in if you can't make it, cause this parties go live over WBAI 99.5fm 7pm-1am. Big thanks to all who have supported WBAI thus far and in the future dancing up a storm on May 11th at ShapeShifter Lab who have generously donated their resources in support.
Liquid Sound Lounge (LSL), est. 1993
Longest running prime time radio show supporting independent soul infused grooves from down-tempo to house with DJ/host Jeannie Hopper, Co-hosts Steve Marshall & Reggie Johnson. Saturday nights 7-10p, WBAI 99.5fm. LSL annual boat cruises have been rockin' the waterways since 1999 along with on-going community building super dance parties connecting socially conscious party people with a purpose.
WBAI 99.5 FM, part of the Pacifica network, is the only alternative listener supported, non-commercial community radio station in New York City. It takes no underwriting or commercials and is subject to no censorship or sponsorship. Saving this radio station, with its incredibly strong signal, is important not just to public radio listeners in the tri-state area, but to the integrity of a free society which requires a free press and alternatives to mainstream corporate media outlets. WBAI 99.5 FM was already struggling with escalating rent costs and, like most non-profits, with declining revenue as a result of the economic downturn of 2008.
Hurricane Sandy forced WBAI from its broadcast facilities in lower Manhattan. Confronted with this situation, the staff and volunteers came together as never before, moving the station out of its former home in just a matter of weeks into temporary admin space provided by Brookfield Properties and temporary broadcast studio at City College.
The future of WBAI is actually bright, so long as we are able to overcome the present crisis. We are actively negotiating the purchase of a building, which will give us a permanent home that we own and significantly reduce our fixed costs on an ongoing basis.
Groove Collective’s impressive history began in the early 1990’s as they fueled the growth of New York City’s acid-jazz scene. They quickly became a staple of a budding underground club scene known for pairing DJs with live performers. This groundbreaking enterprise was run under the media and event production mogul that would eventually become Giant Step. Groove Collective crafted and popularized the fusion of jazz and funk, pioneering what is now referred to globally as “groove” music. Jon Pareles of The New York Times says, “Groove Collective’s identity lies not in one fixed style, but in its capable hospitality to whatever might keep hips swaying.”
For two decades, this legendary group of musicians has improvised and refined the stylistic crosspollination of funk, jazz, house, Latin, hip hop, rock and every party-inducing sound in between. Their 2007 Grammy nomination for “Best Contemporary Jazz Album" is an acknowledgment of the band’s pioneering sound. The members of Groove Collective are fluent in the international language of “groove,” and transcend musical category with one goal in mind: to move listeners’ minds and feet. In-the-pocket drum and bass, colorful and vibrant horns, flavors of world percussion and intricate harmony all fuse together seamlessly under their watch. Groove Collective’s innovative and refined sound is unparalleled. They are the masters of multi-hued funk. Billboard Magazine says that they “erase musical borders” and are “jazz/funk fusion at its most sublime.”
